Each month throughout 2026 highlights a different aspect of our mission — from mentorship and education to creativity and community.

The Unexpected Turn — Twist Ending Challenge

Every great story takes its audience on a journey, but sometimes it’s the unexpected turn that makes a story unforgettable.

A well-crafted twist can change the audience’s understanding of a character, reveal a hidden truth, or turn an ordinary situation into something entirely unexpected. This month, Scriptwriters Network challenges writers to create a compelling story with an ending that surprises, intrigues, or leaves readers looking back at everything that came before.

As part of our 40th Anniversary – 12 Months • 12 Ways We Give Back initiative, this challenge encourages writers to explore creative possibilities, strengthen their storytelling, and discover the power of an unexpected reveal.

All genres are welcome! Whether your preference is drama, comedy, romance, horror, mystery, science fiction, fantasy, or another genre, choose the style you enjoy and make the ending your own.

The Challenge

Participants are invited to submit one original short story or screenplay (up to 1,000 words) featuring an unexpected twist ending.

Scripts may be written in standard screenplay format (encouraged) or in a general narrative format.

Focus Areas

Writers are encouraged to concentrate on the following elements:

Story Development — Establish a compelling situation that draws the reader into the story.
Clues & Details — Incorporate subtle hints or details that contribute to the eventual reveal.
The Twist — Deliver an unexpected but believable turn that changes the audience’s understanding of the story.

What Makes a Strong Twist?

An effective twist should:

Surprise the reader without feeling forced or disconnected from the story.
Be supported by details or clues woven throughout the narrative.
Reveal something meaningful about the characters, circumstances, or events.
Leave the reader with a fresh perspective on the story.

Who Can Participate

This challenge is open to all writers, at any level of experience.

All genres are welcome. Whether you are just beginning or have been writing for years, this is an opportunity to experiment with storytelling, explore unexpected possibilities, and challenge your creative instincts.

Submission Guidelines

One submission per participant
Maximum 1,000 words
Original work only
Any genre is welcome
Screenplay format encouraged, but not required
Please review your submission for spelling and grammar before sending.

Entry Deadline

All submissions must be received between:

November 1 – November 30, 2026
