Jay DouglasJAY DOUGLAS is a native Californian who happened to be born in the Bronx. He attended the legendary Bronx High School of Science and then Columbia University, where he spent most of his study time behind a microphone at WKCR, the Columbia radio station. His lifelong love of broadcasting, storytelling and technology (the geekier the better) came together when Jay began writing funny radio commercials for Dick Orkin’s Famous Radio Ranch in Los Angeles. Wanting to write humor that lasted for more than 60 seconds, Jay earned an MFA in Screenwriting from LMU. He then wrote a few feature scripts that, mercifully, never got produced, so he switched to playwriting, where he could again work with actors the way he did when writing for radio. Curious about how stories work, Jay enrolled at the University of Southern California, where he researched narrative theory and its application to artificial intelligence. After teaching screenwriting and film and television critical studies at most of the major film programs in Southern California, Jay accepted a position at his alma mater, LMU. Among the classes he regularly teaches are screenwriting, transmedia storytelling and the history of television. He has several projects on the drawing board to use artificially-intelligent computer programs to help teach storytelling to beginning screenwriters. Jay is a produced playwright and the author of three books on writing. His latest book project is a biography of advertising and radio legend Dick Orkin, and he is also working on his first novel. When he isn’t writing or teaching, Jay enjoys tinkering as a ham radio operator, website designer and WordPress plugin developer.
