As Scriptwriters Network celebrates 40 years of supporting writers, we’re giving back to the creative community with monthly opportunities to learn, grow, and strengthen your craft.
Each month throughout 2026 highlights a different aspect of storytelling while encouraging writers to build skills they can apply to every screenplay, television script, or story they create.
Everyone is welcome to participate.
August 40th Anniversary Giveaway
Rewrite & Elevate Challenge
Great writing doesn’t happen in the first draft—it happens through revision.
Professional writers know that rewriting is where stories become stronger, characters become more authentic, and every scene gains greater purpose and emotional impact.
As part of our 40th Anniversary – 12 Months • 12 Ways We Give Back initiative, this month’s challenge encourages writers to strengthen one of the most valuable skills in storytelling: the art of revision.
Whether you’re polishing dialogue, strengthening conflict, improving pacing, or deepening your characters, every revision brings your story one step closer to its full potential.
The Challenge
Participants are invited to revise an original scene, sequence, or excerpt from one of their own works (up to 1,000 words).
To demonstrate your revision process, please submit both:
- Your original version
- Your revised version of the same scene or excerpt
Judges will compare your original and revised versions to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of your revisions.
Submissions may be written in standard screenplay format (encouraged) or in a general narrative format.
Focus Areas
Writers are encouraged to concentrate on:
- Stronger dialogue
- Character motivation
- Emotional depth
- Conflict and tension
- Pacing and structure
- Clearer storytelling
What Makes a Strong Rewrite?
Successful revisions often:
- Strengthen character development
- Remove unnecessary dialogue or exposition
- Improve pacing and scene flow
- Raise the emotional stakes
- Clarify character goals and motivations
- Make every line serve the story
Remember…
The first draft tells the story.
The rewrite transforms it.
Optional Creative Approaches (Optional)
Writers looking for an additional creative challenge may choose one of the following:
- Scene Makeover
- Rewrite an older scene you’ve written and strengthen it using what you’ve learned since your original draft.
- Raise the Stakes
- Increase the conflict, tension, or emotional consequences without changing the overall premise.
- Less Is More
- Reduce unnecessary dialogue or description while making the scene even more powerful.
- Character Upgrade
- Revise the scene to better reveal your character’s motivations, emotions, or internal conflict.
- Stronger Ending
- Rewrite the ending of the scene to leave readers eager to know what happens next.
These approaches are optional and intended to inspire creativity. Writers may choose any style that best fits their story.
Who Can Participate
This challenge is open to all writers, regardless of experience.
Whether you’re writing your first screenplay or revising your tenth feature film, learning to rewrite effectively is one of the greatest skills a writer can develop.
