Virtual Event Date: Saturday, April 18, 2026
Time: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM PDT
Instructor: Melessa Y. Sargent
Participants interested in becoming readers for Scriptwriters Network programs are especially encouraged to attend.
About the Class
Understanding how scripts are evaluated is one of the fastest and most effective ways to improve your own writing.
Scriptwriters Network’s Script Analysis ~ Readers Class teaches writers how to break down and evaluate scripts for feature films and television, while also offering an opportunity to become part of SWN’s volunteer reader community.
This class is designed to benefit both writers and the organization.
For writers, it provides practical tools for analyzing story structure, character development, dialogue, pacing, and theme — skills that can immediately strengthen your own scripts.
For Scriptwriters Network, the class helps expand our pool of trained volunteer readers for our programs:
• Hollywood Outreach Program (HOP)
• Television Outreach Program (TOP)
• High Concept Screenplay Program (HCSP)
It’s truly a win-win opportunity — improve your craft while contributing to the writing community.
What You’ll Learn
During this interactive workshop, participants will learn how to:
• Break down a script’s structure and storytelling elements
• Evaluate character development and dialogue
• Identify pacing, tone, and narrative flow
• Recognize both strong writing and common storytelling issues
• Provide constructive, professional script feedback
These skills are valuable not only for reading scripts, but also for improving your own writing projects.

This workshop is ideal for:
• Writers who want to strengthen their storytelling and script structure
• Screenwriters interested in learning how scripts are evaluated in the industry
• Writers who want to develop stronger analytical and editing skills

Whether you are an emerging writer or an experienced storyteller, understanding script analysis will give you valuable tools you can apply to every project you write.
Why Script Analysis Matters
Many industry professionals agree that reading and analyzing scripts is one of the most effective ways to become a stronger writer.
When reviewing scripts written by others, it becomes easier to identify what works — and what doesn’t — in storytelling.
Over 500 members and guests have taken this class over the years. Many participants have reported noticeable improvement in their writing, while some have even secured professional script reading opportunities using the skills learned in this workshop.
Becoming a Script Reader
Participants interested in becoming volunteer readers for SWN programs will learn how to provide:
• Positive, constructive feedback
• Detailed script evaluations
• Professional script coverage
Readers who participate in SWN programs may receive a Certificate of Completion after:
• Reading for two program sessions (one session per year), or
• Completing twenty (20) script evaluations
Please note: Readers are accepted only at the beginning of program sessions, not during active sessions.
