The characters in a comic narrative journey down somewhat similar paths, but they take the trip in their own unique fashion, with several surprising detours. In this workshop, we’ll cruise on down that road together, examining the Comic Hero’s Journey through films like Groundhog Day,40 Year-Old Virgin, This Is The End and others. And by the end of our journey, you’ll be able to apply that comic paradigm to your own comic concepts.

About the Speaker:
For more than a decade, Steve Kaplan has been the industry’s most sought-after expert on comedy. In addition to having taught at UCLA, NYU, Yale and other top universities, Steve Kaplan created the HBO Workspace, the HBO New Writers Program and was co-founder and Artistic Director of Manhattan Punch Line Theatre. He has given comedy workshops at such companies as DreamWorks, Disney, HBO, Paramount, Touchstone and others. In New York, Steve was co-founder and Artistic Director of Manhattan Punch Line Theatre, where he developed writers such as Peter Tolan(Analyze This), writer and producer David Crane (Friends, Episodes), writer/producer Tracy Poust (The Crazy Ones, Ugly Betty, Will & Grace), Michael Patrick King (Sex and The City), David Ives (All In The Timing), Howard Korder (Boardwalk Empire), Lisa Loomer, and Kenneth Lonergan.
In Los Angeles, he created the HBO New Writers Project, discovering HBO Pictures screenwriter Will Scheffer (Big Love),and performer/writer Sandra Tsing Loh; and the HBO Workspace, a developmental workshop in Hollywood that introduced and presented performers such as Jack Black and Tenacious D, Kathy Griffin, Nia Vardalos and Paul F. Tompkins. At the Workspace, he was Executive Producer for the award-winning HBO Original Programming documentary DROP DEAD GORGEOUS. His recently published book,The Hidden Tools of Comedy: The Serious Business of Being Funny, is one of the top-rated books on screenwriting at Amazon.com.
Steve has been teaching his Comedy Intensive workshops to thousands of students around the world, with workshops scheduled in Los Angeles, New York, London and Singapore.
