Outreach Program for Television
Submissions must be postmarked by July 7, 2007.
Back in the 90's,the Scriptwriter's Network created the Carl Sautter Memorial Screenwriting Competition as well as the Producer's Outreach Program for Television. With the elimination of the competition, this program merges the best of both worlds. We are a script service, with benefits, dedicated to providing quality reviews/critiques for television writers. The fee for the service is $40.00 per script for members and $60 for Non-Members. Entries occur once per year with a deadline in mid-July; the final decision being made in mid-December. This allows adequate time for our readers to read and critique each script without feeling rushed. It also makes a nice Christmas present for the winner/runners-up. Check this website for the most up-to-date information. Phase One: ALL screening is anonymous. Two readers will evaluate the script. Each will give written feedback on his/her analysis of dramatic structure, originality, plot development, characterization, dialogue, style, and format. If both readers recommend the script, it moves on to Phase Two. If only one reader recommends the script, it then goes go to a tie-breaking, third reader. If both readers determine that the script should not receive recommendations to move forward, the writer is notified of that decision. All evaluations are sent to the writer by e-mail, unless one isn't provided. Then they will be sent by regular mail. NO scripts are returned. Phase Two: Should a script receive a double recommend, members of the Carl Sautter Television Outreach Program Committee will determine final qualification. This is a rigorous process; but remember, the writer is NOT competing against other scripts, but against an industry standard. We will ask questions such as, is this script, as written, so compelling that it will get the writer work? Selected Scripts: Recommended scripts are scored based on story, originality, structure, character, dialogue, and format/punctuation. The highest score will receive a gift certificate to the Writer's Store, and the two runners-up (if there are any,) will receive a year's subscript to scr(i)pt magazine. For those scripts that are selected, the writer(s) will meet with a member of the CSMTOP committee to develop a list of showrunners and producers, as well as network and studio development executives, whom the Network can contact on the writer's behalf. The timing may be such that any obtained reads could occur prior to the staffing season, to offer the best opportunity to translating the recommendation into a job. If the writer has an agent, it will be important for us to know that as most shows today require it, however it's not a requirement to enter the program. Since this is a very busy time for the industry, the exact timing is impossible to predict. The Scriptwriter's Network reserves the right to publicize the writer's name and selected script. Success stories: In the 9 years, we've been reviewing television scripts; many have gone on to staff jobs on various shows. A few that come to mind are Laura Brennan (Lost World), Heather Ash (Stargate SG-1), and Carla Robinson (Battlestar Galactica.) If you have any questions, concerns, etc., please feel free to contact Diane House (Dramas) at dkhouse7@gte.net or Xaque Gruber (Sitcoms) at xaquetv@yahoo.com. 2007 Carl Sautter Memorial Television Outreach Program Submissions Application: Click Here for the 4-page PDF file for the 2007 Carl Sautter Memorial Television Outreach Program Submissions Application for the Scriptwriters Network.
