Scriptwriters Network
Producers Outreach Program
And
Television Outreach Program

The August session of the Producers Outreach Program is currently in progress.

The Network is in the process of revamping the program. The new version will be launched in 2005.

Quicklinks:

Overview:

The POP and TOP were created in 1995 to give Network members the opportunity to have their scripts read by accredited producers/production companies. You do not need an agent or manager to participate.

In order to be eligible for this service, your script must be recommended by two independent, anonymous readers. In addition, a POP submission must be recommended by a POP Committee Member, and a TOP submission must be recommended by the entire TOP Committee. Approximately 5% of the scripts entered into the programs in each round receive this honor.

The participating producers/development executives have completed questionnaires, stating the type of material they would like to receive. Loglines are submitted to these participants, based on their requests and writer permission.

The POP is held three times a year in April, August and December. The TOP is held once a year during August.

Specific rules and regulations, including deadlines, for the POP and TOP can be found on their respective submission forms. (The POP form is available year round. The TOP form is only available around the August session.)

Coverage

All scripts entered in the programs will be critiqued by two anonymous readers. The critiques cover areas such as story, structure, character development and dialogue. They are similar to what you would receive from a studio and what the readers, themselves, would expect to receive on their scripts.

The coverage is written with the intent of helping the writer improve the script. Therefore, most of the analysis is usually suggestions for improvement and discussion of scenes which do not work for that specific reader. Positive feedback is given where merited, too. However, do not expect to receive positive accolades throughout the critique.

All coverage will be emailed. If you do not have email, coverage will be sent via regular mail. Please include a large, self-addressed envelope without postage with your submission in order to receive your critiques.

The coverage will be sent to the writers as soon as it is received. Please remember that everyone involved with the POP and TOP are volunteers. The turnaround time to receive the critiques varies from two to eight weeks after the submission deadline. The average turnaround time is four to six weeks.

Since your script receives coverage until you receive either three recommends or two passes, each entry will garner two to four critiques. If you utilize the resubmit feature discussed below, you could receive up to eight pieces of coverage.

Submission Requirements

You must be a general or affiliate Network member to participate in the programs. Your dues must be paid in full for the duration of the session in which you entered.

You may join the Network at the time of your POP/TOP submission. Download and complete the membership application and include it with your program entry. You do not need to submit a separate script with your membership application. (Please click on Membership Application on the Home Page for details.) However, the application fee still applies. You may submit one check to cover all dues and fees.

Scripts submitted to the programs will not be returned.

Fees and Resubmit Feature

The POP/TOP entry fee is $30 per script. If your script does not receive the required three recommends for advancement, you may rewrite it and resubmit it for free. This resubmit feature is available only once per entry fee.

Readers Both the POP and TOP are looking for readers. To qualify, you must:

  • have won or placed highly in a contest,
  • be a professional reader in the industry,
  • have sold or optioned a script,
  • be a person of long professional standing in the industry, or
  • have taken our FREE one-day class in reading for the Network.

The readers' training classes are held three times a year, usually right before the POP deadlines. Upcoming classes will be listed in the calendar section of the Web site. You do not need to be a member of the Network to attend a class.
