March E-Track Meeting Making a (Great!) Living by Living in a World of Make Believe (March 2002) |
"See the poster!" enthused Marisa D'Vari, author of the book Script Magic: Subconscious Techniques to Conquer Writer's Block at the Network's March 23 E-track meeting.
D'Vari began her presentation by explaining her theory that the human mind sees in pictures.
"When it comes time to communicate your ideas to the audience in a darkened theater - or a producer during a pitch -you must think visually," she advised. "It's important to see the poster before you create your script."
D'Vari pointed out that in the film Gone with the Wind, the wartime passion, betrayal, lust, and gore was all revealed in a single poster.
For her presentation, D'Vari had three objectives: first, to help screenwriters start scenes in seconds instead of waiting around for inspiration. The second was stress the importance of dialogue (Often, dialogue is the only element an executive will read in your script). And finally, D'Vari announced that her major goal was to help screenwriters bring their characters into today's world.
After speaking about the many concepts in her book, such as mind mapping, left brain/right brain thinking, the character diary, the magic book (a diary to hold the characters, dialogue, and themes of a screenplay) D'Vari spent the final portion of the class giving attendees a hands-on tutorial in "treasure mapping," using found images to create an actual "poster" of their script, containing all the subconscious imagery necessary to spur the script on and get it sold.
D'Vari invites members to take advantage of a special offering on her web site: a personalized and signed first edition of Script Magic, and a fun creativity toy, all for just $12.00, which includes free shipping.
Email her at mdvari@deg.com for how you would like the book inscribed, or find the link at http://www.scriptmagic.com.
