With the help of the Los Angeles Public Library, each year the Network sponsors a writing contest for high school students throughout the city. Entrants may submit a short story, short script, or other creative writing sample up to ten pages in length. These entries are judged by Network members. The ten outstanding high school writers chosen are given a free one-year's membership in the Scriptwriters Network. During that year, the high school fellows are paired with mentor - Scriptwriters Network members who volunteer their time and insights toward the purpose of helping the student write a short screenplay. The fellowship is not intended to be a "classroom" or "teaching" situation. It is simply an opportunity for students to expose themselves to the business of screenwriting, through listening to the speakers that come to the Universal Studios meetings, networking with the adult writers in the organization, and utilizing such facilities as our tape and script libraries. The culmination of the program is a staged reading of the short scripts of the High school writers. This takes place at the Central Library downtown.
