Hollywood Outreach Program
Next deadline July 21, 2007
Launched in January 2005, the Hollywood Outreach Program (HOP) combines the best features of the Network's long-running Carl Sautter Memorial Scriptwriting Competition (1991-2007) and its Producers Outreach Program (1995-2004). Essentially a script coverage service with extra benefits, the HOP offers inexpensive, professional-level, written feedback on feature film and MOW screenplays, with an eye towards helping writers improve their craft. Scripts which receive three "Recommends" from the program will be marketed by the HOP Committee (in coordination with the writer) to the production companies, management companies and agencies with which the Network has relationships, in order to help writers obtain representation, sell or option their work or land a writing assignment. HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS Scripts may be submitted six times per year, with entry deadlines on the Second Saturday of January, March, May, July, September and November. A writer or writing team may only submit one script per round. Entries may be hand-delivered to the Network lecture occurring on the deadline date. Late entries will be held for the next round. Entries for each round are read over a two-month period by volunteer readers - primarily members of the Scriptwriters Network - who meet the following criteria:
The Readers provide written feedback on each script, covering the areas of Story, Structure, Character, Dialogue and Format. The feedback is written with the intent of helping the writer improve the script, usually discussing aspects of the script which do not work for that specific reader and giving suggestions for improvement. Positive feedback is given where merited as well. After writing the critique, each Reader is then asked to "Recommend" or "Not Recommend" the script for advancement in the program. Scripts which receive two "Not Recommend" evaluations by the Readers are judged as being completed for that round, with the written feedback being sent back to the writer or writing team via email. A split vote between the two initial Readers leads to a third read from the reader pool. Any script with two "Recommends" is automatically read by a member of the HOP Committee (all of whom meet the criteria above). If the Committee member does not recommend the script, it is either finished for that round (if this is the second "Not Recommend") or goes to another Committee member for final evaluation. All scripts receive a minimum of two and a maximum of four written evaluations in any one round. If a script receives three "Recommends" from a combination of Readers and HOP Committee Members, the HOP Committee will work with the writer to market the script to production companies, management companies and agencies who have agreed to participate in this program. Please note scripts are targeted to companies on the basis of their genre preference and budgetary requirements to give the writer a better chance of selling/optioning the script or obtaining work from it. Any script which does not receive three "Recommends" in a round (i.e., gets two "Not Recommends"), may be re-entered one time only in a subsequent round for a reduced fee. ENTRY FEES This program is open to both Scriptwriters Network members and non-members. Entry fees are:
